Ozempic Vision Loss: What's Known About the US Lawsuit

Ozempic Vision Loss: What's Known About the US Lawsuit

Ozempic vision loss reports started in safety databases and later reached US courts. Here's what the lawsuits claim, what regulators say, and what to do if your eyesight changes.

Ozempic vision loss reports started in safety databases, not in courtrooms. Doctors and patients sent notes to pharmacovigilance systems, which collect possible side effects once a drug reaches people. Some of those reports later became the basis for lawsuits. A lawsuit makes a claim, and a safety signal is a reason to look closer. Neither one proves on its own that semaglutide caused the problem.

Why this topic is back in the news

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but they are separate products with separate prescribing information. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy is approved for weight management. The exact wording of each label is on DailyMed, the public database of US prescribing information, and that is the text to check for the product you use.

In 2025, the European Medicines Agency reviewed the eye reports through its safety committee, PRAC. The EMA's product information for Ozempic now lists NAION among the side effects, which is why regulators are discussing it.

What the lawsuits actually allege

The claims center on sudden vision loss that plaintiffs link to NAION. They also allege that the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, did not warn patients adequately about that risk. These are allegations. A complaint describes what a plaintiff says happened. It doesn't establish that the claim is true.

I could not confirm several details for this article: the court where the first cases were filed, the filing dates, how many cases have been consolidated, and where they stand procedurally. These facts change over time. Check the public federal court records on PACER before you rely on any number you see online.

A court decision can address whether a party met its legal duties in a specific case. It cannot, by itself, set how common a side effect is or explain how the drug works in the body. Those answers come from clinical data, regulators, and peer-reviewed research. At OzemNews, we try to keep each of these steps separate when we cover a claim like this one.

I also could not confirm a current public statement from Novo Nordisk on these claims, so I won't quote one here. The company's newsroom and the Ozempic label are the places to look for its position.

NAION explained without jargon

The optic nerve carries visual signals from the eye to the brain. Like any tissue, it depends on a steady blood supply. NAION, short for nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, happens when blood flow to the front part of that nerve drops and the nerve is damaged. The word nonarteritic means the cause is not inflammation of the arteries.

The usual pattern is sudden vision loss in one eye, typically without pain. Some people notice it when they wake up. The condition is rare, and its exact mechanism is still being studied. EMA uses the term "very rare" for side effects that affect fewer than 1 in 10,000 people, and that is the category it applies to NAION with semaglutide.

What the evidence says so far

In 2025, PRAC concluded that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide. The committee's full reasoning sits in its published meeting documents, which are worth reading if you want the details.

Most of the evidence comes from two sources. One is observational studies that analyze health records. The other is spontaneous reports sent to safety databases. The FDA's FAERS system is one of these. Its reports are voluntary, and the FDA says the system has no denominator. It can't show how many people took the drug, so reports alone can't produce a rate or prove cause.

Observational studies have their own limits. Other factors can distort results, and studies using health records have not all agreed. That is why a safety signal and a study result are different things.

The SUSTAIN-6 trial adds another piece. It enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk. Diabetic retinopathy complications were more frequent with semaglutide than with placebo, reported as 3.0% versus 1.8%.

The trial was not designed to test NAION, so it doesn't answer that question. The authors did discuss how quickly blood sugar improved as a possible factor, particularly in people who already had retinopathy. That's why eye health matters for anyone with diabetes who takes these drugs.

Who may need extra attention

Diabetes already carries eye risks of its own, so the prescribing information's section on diabetic retinopathy is worth reading in full. Ask your prescriber how it applies to your situation.

If you've had NAION in one eye before, or you have ongoing eye complaints, talk with your prescriber and an ophthalmologist before starting semaglutide. Bring a list of any eye symptoms, and ask whether a baseline eye exam makes sense for you. Don't assume a routine check-up covers your eyes.

Warning signs and what to do

Watch for sudden blurring, a dark patch or shadow in part of your vision, loss of vision in one eye, or a change in how colors look. Any of these calls for same-day care from an eye doctor or an emergency department. Don't wait for your next routine appointment.

Don't stop or change your dose on your own. Talk first with the doctor who prescribed the drug. They can weigh your blood sugar, your overall treatment plan, and what your eye symptoms might mean.

If you think a medicine caused a problem, report it. In the US, the FDA's MedWatch program accepts reports from patients and health professionals, and its page explains how to submit one. Outside the US, use your country's pharmacovigilance system. Reports like these feed the data regulators use, even when the cause remains unclear.

Relying on memory for doses and side effects is risky. Log everything in one place.

Reading the case carefully, and where to follow it

Keep three questions apart: what a lawsuit claims, what a safety signal suggests, and what the science has shown. Right now, the eye question sits mostly in the signal category. Regulators have recognized NAION as a very rare side effect, but the court outcomes and the long-term science are not settled.

If you want to follow this as it develops, check the FDA and EMA pages listed in our sources, then follow the OzemNews coverage, where we update the story as confirmed facts change.

FAQ

Can Ozempic cause blindness?

Regulators have listed NAION as a very rare side effect of semaglutide. It is a serious possibility to discuss with your doctor, but the evidence does not show that it is common.

Did a US court rule that Ozempic causes vision loss?

Not as far as I could confirm for this article. The cases involve allegations, and any ruling applies to a specific claim. Check the public court records for current status.

Should I stop semaglutide if I'm worried about my eyes?

Don't stop or change your dose on your own. Contact your prescriber and an eye doctor first, and get same-day care if you notice sudden changes in your vision.

Where can I report a vision problem I think came from a medicine?

In the US, you can report through the FDA's MedWatch program. In other countries, use the local pharmacovigilance system. Reports help regulators track patterns, even when causality is not yet clear.
